After studying Philosophy, History and Science of Music, Thomas Johannes Mayer studied singing in Cologne with Liselotte Hammes and Kurt Moll. After making his debut in Regensburg and Darmstadt, he played the title role in Don Giovanni and Achilles in Penthesilea by Othmar Schoeck at Basle Opera then Wotan in the Ring and the title role in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler at the Karlsruhe Staatstheater. He then became a member of the Hamburg Staatsoper ( the four evil roles in Tales of Hoffmann, Mandryka in Arabella, the title role in Rigoletto, Scarpia in Tosca, Kaspar in Der Freischütz, Jochanaan in Salome and Wotan). He gained international fame for his interpretation of the title role inWozzek and Posa in Don Carlo at La Scala Milan in 2008. He has performed at the great international opera houses (Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Tokyo, Vienna and Zurich…) as well as at the Bregenz Festival, the Bayreuth Festival (2012, 2013 and 2014) and at the Salzburg Festival in 2010 and 2011. He has interpreted the role of Wotan at the Bavarian Staatsoper in Munich under the direction of Kent Nagano and Kirill Petrenko, at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin with Daniel Barenboim, at the Deutsche Oper of Berlin with Sir Simon Rattle, at the Paris National Opera with Philippe Jordan and at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia with Zubin Mehta. He has also sung Amfortas in Parsifal at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin conducted by Donald Runnicles, Barak in Die Frau ohne Schatten at Leipzig and Zurich Operas, the Dutchman in The Flying Dutchman at the New National Theatre in Tokyo and Mandryka at the Munich Festival.
