Daphnis et Chloé

Both similar and different, two French composers and two choreographers of the New York City Ballet – Georges Balanchine who founded it and Benjamin Millepied who was trained there- are the heart of this evening. Georges Balanchine set his first creation for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947 to an early work by Bizet, Le Palais de cristal, as a tribute to the company and the French ballet tradition. A refine work intrinsically connected to music, this piece is a model of academic virtuosity, unfolding in the wonderful case designed by an artist of colours and lights, Christian Lacroix. With Daphnis and Chloe, Benjamin Millepied offered his third creation to the Paris Opera Ballet, reviving the myth with the help of his friend Daniel Buren. Inspired by Balanchine, the choreographer drew his inspiration on the rhythms and colours of a “chorographical symphony” by Ravel for orchestra and chorus. Born in 1904 in St. Petersburg to Georgian parents, Georgi Balanchivadze was trained at the Imperial Ballet School, and joined the Imperial Dance Company Corps de Ballet eight years later, in 1921. He also studied piano at the St. Petersburg Music Conservatory.&nbsp;When he joined Diaghilev’s Russian Ballets, Balanchine met Stravinsky and opened his mind to modern arts. His first choreographies (Apollo, 1928) are a testimony of his desire to change ballet into an illustration of music, to “transform sound into movement”. In 1934, Lincoln Kirstein invited this “Russian-European” artist in America to found the School of American Ballet that would lead to the creation of the New York City Ballet, headed by Balanchine from 1948 to his death, in 1983.&nbsp;The Paris Opera always maintained close ties with Balanchine. As early as 1929, Jacques Rouché, manager of the Palais Garnier, invited him to stage a ballet. But Balanchine was ill and asked Serge Lifar to replace him. In 1947, the choreographer was asked to come and revive three of his ballets (Apollo, Serenade, and The Fairy’s Kiss); an occasion for which he also created Le Palais de Cristal.&nbsp;Balanchine became a regular guess, teaching his works when they entered the Paris Opera repertoire, such as in 1974 for a Stravinsky programme (Agon, Capriccio, Orpheus) and in 1975 for a Ravel Festival (La Valse, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Tzigane, Sonatine).&nbsp;Since then, many of his works entered the Institution’s repertoire, including Divertimento n° 15, Violin Concerto, Symphony in Three Movements, Themes and Variations, Allegro brillante, Jewels, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Brahms-Schonberg Quartet and Mozartiana.

Born on October 25, 1838 in Paris to a family of musicians, Georges Bizet studied piano at an early age and was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at 10, where he studied with Halévy. His brilliant studies culminated in 1857 when he won the Prix de Rome. The same year, his first stage work, the one-act operetta Le Docteur miracle performed at the Bouffes Parisiens and was awarded a prize by Offenbach, shared with Lecocq. During the next three years that he spent in Rome, he composed an opera buffa, Don Procopio. But his first operas, Les Pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers, 1863) and La Jolie Fille de Perth (The Fair Maid of Perth, 1866) were not successful. Djamileh composed to Musset and performed in 1872 at the Opéra Comique, or his incidental music composed for Daudet’s play L’Arlésienne and staged in October 1st at the Vaudeville, were both failures. However, an orchestral suite derived from L’Arlésienne and performed at the Concerts Pasdeloup in December, was instantly popular. Encouraged by this success, Bizet began composing Carmen, interrupted by the writing of a grand opera based on Corneille, Don Rodrigue, which remained unfinished after the fire that burned the opera house where it was to be performed. Sadly, the premiere of Carmen was another failure that hastened his end. He died on June 3, 1875 in Bougival, at only 37 years old.

On March 5th 2014, Amandine Albisson is made an "Étoile" following a performance of Onegin (John Cranko) in which she performed the role of Tatiana. 

As part of the Paris Opera Ballet’s official tours, Amandine Albisson has performed in Spain (Madrid, 2019), the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, 2019) and Japan (Tokyo, 2020).

Coming from an artistic Swiss family, Philippe Jordan’s is regarded as one of the most established and important conductors of our time. He has been appointed Music Director of the Wiener Staatsoper beginning in September 2020. 
Jordan started his career at the age of 20 as musical director at Theater Ulm. In 1998 he became assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera. From 2001-2004 he was principal conductor of Graz Opera and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. During this period he also debuted at several of the world’s leading opera houses and festivals, for example the Metropolitan Opera New York, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Bavarian State Opera, the Wiener Staatsoper and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and the festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Glyndebourne and Salzburg. From 2006-2010 Jordan returned to the Berlin State Opera as principal guest conductor. During this time he also appeared regularly in his hometown at the Zurich Opera. In the summer of 2012 Philippe Jordan debuted at the Bayreuth Festival. In Summer 2021, Philippe Jordan will leave his post as musical director of the Opéra national de Paris, which he has helmed since 2009. During his time as musical director in Paris he has conducted numerous premieres and revivals, including Moses und Aaron, La Damnation de Faust, Der Rosenkavalier, Samson et Dalila, Lohengrin, Don Carlos (French original version), Benvenuto Cellini, Bérénice and Les Troyens, Don Giovanni and the new production of Borodin’s Prince Igor. In his last season as musical director at Opéra national de Paris he will conduct Wagner’s “Ring” cycle in a concert version. 
As a symphonic conductor, Philippe Jordan has conducted the world’s most famous orchestras. He has also been principal conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker from 2014 to 2020. Together with the orchestra he has developed complete cycles of Schubert’s symphonies and Beethoven’s symphonies and piano concerti, and a cycle of J. S. Bach’s major masses and oratorios. In a three-part Bruckner project at the Wiener Musikverein, he performed the composer’s seventh, eighth and ninth symphonies in a contrast-filled dialogue with modern classics by Kurtág, Ligeti and Scelsi. For the Beethoven anniversary year, he also performed a reconstruction of the legendary Grand Concert of 22 December 1808 with performances in Paris and Vienna. 
His recording work with the Paris Opera Orchestra includes discs of Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie, Stravinski’s The Rite of Spring, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s and Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies.

Born in Bordeaux in 1977, Benjamin Millepied spent part of his childhood in Senegal. Introduced to dance by his mother, a teacher of African and contemporary dance, he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Lyon at the age of thirteen where he studied with Michel Rahn. In summer 1992 he followed a course at the School of American Ballet which he subsequently joined in 1993 after obtaining a grant from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.In 1994 he won the Prix de Lausanne and the same year Jerome Robbins chose him to play the main role in 2 & 3 Part Inventions created for the students of the School of American Ballet. After joining the New York City Ballet Corps de Ballet in 1995, he was promoted to soloist in 1998 and became principal dancer in 2002. Aurélie Dupont joined the Paris Opera’s Ballet School in 1983. She attended all its classes and participated in performances and official tours.After entering the Paris Opera’s Corps de Ballet in 1989, she was promoted to “Coryphée” in 1991 and “Sujet” in 1992. The same year, she won the Gold Medal (in the junior category) at the Varna International Ballet Competition. She received the Prix AROP (Association pour le Rayonnement de l’Opéra de Paris) in 1993 and the Prix du Cercle Carpeaux in 1994. After entering the Company, Aurélie Dupont performed in all the major productions from the classical and the contemporary repertoires. She was also cast in solo roles in Pierre Lacotte’s Giselle and La Sylphide, George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, Roland Petit’s world premiere production of Rythme de Valses (1994), Rudolf Nureyev’s La Bayadère, Roland Petit’s Le Loup, Angelin Preljocaj’s Annonciation, Rudolf Nureyev’s The Nutcracker, and Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring (“The Chosen One”).Promoted to “Première Danseuse” in 1996, she danced the principal roles in Soir de fête (Léo Staats), Raymonda, Don Quichotte and La Bayadère – three productions by Rudolf Nureyev, Manon (Kenneth MacMillan) and Casanova in Angelin Preljocaj’s world premiere production at the Paris Opera (1998). In 2001, Aurélie Dupont, received the Prix Benois de la Danse for her interpretation of the roles of Nikiya in La Bayadère (choreographed by Rudolf Nureyev) and Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (choreographed by John Neumeier). She is a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres and a member of the Ordre National du Mérite. Appointed by the Paris Opera’s Director Stéphane Lissner on February 4 2016, Aurélie Dupont officially took over as the Paris Opera’s Director of Dance on August 1 2016. She succeeds Benjamin Millepied.

François Alu&nbsp; is made an "Étoile" on Saturday April 23th 2022, following a performance of La Bayadère (Rudolf Nureyev) on the stage of the Opéra Bastille, in which he danced the role of Solor.As part of the Paris Opera Ballet's&nbsp;official tours, François Alu has performed in Spain (Madrid, 2019), Russia (Novosibirsk, 2018), Japan (Tokyo, 2017), Denmark (Copenhagen, 2015), Quebec (Montreal, 2014)...François Alu was named Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite.

After studying Piano and Composition at the G.B. Martini Conservatoire in Bologna, Alessandro Di Stefano began his career as a concert pianist. Awarded a grant by the G. Verdi Conservatoire of Milan, he specialised in chamber music and operatic repertoire and took part in numerous recitals. Discovering an increasing interest in choral conducting, he continued his studies with Franco Monego at the Milan Conservatoire where he obtained first prize for conducting and choir training and took part in master classes with Aldo Ceccato and Piero Bellugi. In 2000, whilst continuing to pursue his career as a concert pianist and accompanist, he joined the Nice Opera company as vocal coach and was appointed assistant chorus master the following year. He also worked as vocal coach for Traviata at the Antibes Festival and participated in a number of operatic productions for the Chorégies d’Orange. He conducted the Nice Opera Orchestra on numerous occasions, notably during the Nice Baroque Festival. In 2004, he joined the Paris Opera as Assistant Chorus master, since when he has worked alongside a number of prestigious conductors including Philippe Jordan, Daniel Oren, Evelino Pido, Renato Palumbo, Jiří Bělohlávek, Semyon Bychkov, Gustav Kuhn, Michail Jurowski and Kent Nagano. From 2007 to 2009, he was acting Chorus master and in 2008 accompanied the Opera Chorus to Japan on a tour featuring Tristan and Isolde and Ariane et Barbe-Bleue conducted by Semyon Bychkov and Lylvain Cambreling. Alessandro Di Stafano has now participated in over 50 Paris Opera productions and numerous radio broadcasts for France Musique and Radio Classique as well as various audiovisual recordings. He is currently Assistant Chorus master at the Paris Opera.
